Research for this was interesting,
I enjoyed looking at other sites and seeing how they worked. One of the best ways i found for researching this was not only looking at other sites, but also see what how others are accomplishing their own sites. I have also found that see what other designers are trying to fix and what kinds of things they are posting about online. I also have looked in to other books such as Don’t make me Think a book on basic web usability.

In choosing the type for lawrencefolio.com I had to consider what would be the easiest for the view. I do not have access to mich in the way of web type editing programs so I decided that the best way to render the type was to use the standard fonts that most computers had available to them,
Ariel, Helvedica, (sans serif)
Times New Roman, Georgia (serif)
In the future I hope to be able to use better fonts on the site, but at this point this will have to do.

I chose to use a san serif font for my site. I really like the geometic look and the simplicity of the design.
My first choice would be helvetica.

Okay, it’s bad. Really bad.
But not because I can’t make it well. Because I ran out of time (which I know is my own fault) and as I feverishly began creating the style guide, I realized that there were so many things I wanted and needed to say. I was able to do at least a portion of what I wanted to do to every element at least once to one element. Did that make sense? For example, I want to section off pieces of the site separately and have a whole page or more that focuses on everything for that one element. So, show the height, width, color, padding, margins, images, typeface, type size, etc. But I also think you could be just as effective doing it the other way and having a page with all the type, a page with all the colors, etc.
Any ideas of what you like better?

I kept my type basically to one typeface.
I chose to use Arial and Rockwell. I only used Rockwell in the logo and navigation. But I’m finding it looks really kind of… tweeny? Or something. I’m happy with the Arial. I was having problems with Helvetica, but Arial solved them.

Here is my wireframe.

Wire Frame it up.
I never considered having a left sidebar before, but it’s growing on me. I don’t mind this structure, but I am finding that the content section (550px wide) may be slightly small? Then again, I don’t want the user to be overwhelmed. This did help me to see where parts of the site end and begin.
