Pet Project Week 3

by Chad
Week 1

Week 1

For this weeks blog post, i have chosen 1 image from each of the three weeks image studies to showcase and explain my thoughts about them.

This was my favorite image from the first week of photographs. I love the repetition of the 5 objects, as well as the unity that it conveys. Furthermore, the depth of field keeps my eyes in the frame right on one of the thirds lines, forcing me to study and explore the nice curved shapes.

Week 2

I really loved this image from the second week because of the shape. These pieces can be linked together to weave such an interesting flowing shape. Again, i think the very shallow depth of field add alot of interest to the image. Your eyes are not able to wander far from the point that is in focus.

Week 3

Week 3

For this weeks images, i wanted to do something a bit different. Since the objects I am using have no real meaning to most of us, there is no context i can really put them in. As I am most interested in the shapes that the objects make, I decided to photograph the object with some contrasting colors underneath (in this case, marker scribbled on a piece of paper) and play with my live trace settings. I am quite happy with the results, and plan on doing more experimentation like this in the future. I am very interested in the things that the pieces remind me of. From day 1 I have thought about communism, as the shapes can be put together to somewhat resemble a hammer and sickle.

Milk & Cookies

by Chad

My objective was to find, photograph, and present the alphabet in a unique way that we may have never seen before. I knew that it was going to take some thinking, concepting, and observing the world around me.

I used broken cookies and a glass of milk to form the alphabet

During one of these think sessions, i thought about a snack. My mind immediately remembered taking bites out of food and observing the shapes that would be made with the remaining food in my hands. I brainstormed and found that by pouring a glass of milk, and breaking cookies, i could easily form all 26 letters of the alphabet.

I feel that this displaying of the alphabet merges creativity, education, art, and delicious home-baked fun. It may just influence viewers to slow down and observe what their bites have created next time they sit down with warm cookies and a glass of milk.

Learning Summary

Some letters came easily. Others took a bit more creativity. Some cookies look much closer to actual letterforms than others. The greatest challenge I faced was the distribution of letterforms designed with the glass of milk. The round letters are clustered in 3 main places in the alphabet. 3 of the first 4 letters have rounded, glass of milk-like shapes, as do 3 of the 4 letters between G and J as well as all 4 letters O through R. I had to do my best to design the page so it didn’t feel so clustered.
