Week Nine: Mailboxes

by Samantha

Week nineThe mailboxes in this photo create an interesting depth. I love the variety in their shapes, sizes, and colors. I also like the composition as it moves your eye from one end of the photo to the other.

Week Eight

This weeks  favorite photo is the first photo  I have taken of my pet in its natural environment. I like the contast of the orange against the purple and the placement of the three main objects.

Week Seven

Week Seven

In this week’s photo I like the repetition of shape yet the repetition is also skewed.  I also like the texture of the background against the foreground.

Week 6

I picked this photo as my favorite for this week because I thought the warm dynamic  lighting was interesting. I liked the simplicity of this photo with the  textures from the flower and the jar lid contrasting each other.

Pet Project: Week Five

Week Five

Week Five

I chose this photo for  my favorite this week because I think the subject matter is interesting to look at. I love that the jar lid is sticking out of the middle of the same repetitious object. I think that because each blade of grass is so similar yet all have a variety and difference, makes this composition work well.

Week 4

Week 4

I like the composition of week four’s photo with big and small objects. I also love the color this photo has. I think the colors work well together with the different compliments: green and red, yellow and blue/purple.

Week 1

Week one I experimented with objects around the house. This image was my favorite of the first photo shoot because I thought it was the most visually interesting. I shot this photo through a glass bowl full of water. There are  two objects in the bowl, the top object is a reflection of the bottom. I love how clear the top reflection is giving the illusion of a third. I think this is visually interesting because the top reflection appears heaver than the middle yet it is still floating above. I also love the atmosphere between each object because it just doesn’t seem natural for these particular objects to be floating. I also like the vertical feeling this photograph gives to a horizontal composition.

 Week Two:
I took a few more photos of week two in the apartment but in general I ended up taking it in a different direction and shot pictures of my “pet” out in a more natural enviornment. I had two favorites from this photoshoot for two very different reasons. I love Photo one of week two because I love the repition of shapes yet there is variety in the sizes between the burner and the jar lid. I also love the repition of the color of the jar lid that is also on the burner. The color combination of this composition work very well together as complimentary colors, orange and blue. I think that the monocromatic feel of the second picture from week two works really well. I love the rustic feel this piece gives and I think the natural enviornment is very compatible to my old and rusty pet. I look forward to experimenting further outdoors.

 Week Three:
I shot the pictures for week three in an office setting. I chose this picture as my favorite because I love how the two objects almost feel as if they mirror each other in color and shape yet contrast each other immensly by size and the feel of the object. My pet, the jar lid, is old, rusty  and scraped up while the mirror feels new and is smooth and reflective.

Alphabet Lunch

by Samantha

The world is full of images and meanings that no one notices because nobody takes the time to look. This assignment taught us as designers to open our eyes and view the world as it should be, through creative eyes, or even just in a different way. Going out into the world with open eyes and finding the alphabet and watching as each letter emerged or was created out of the ordinary was the main purpose in the Found  Alphabet assignment.

The alphabet found in a sandwhich built from start to finish.

The alphabet built in a sandwich from start to finish.

I am an Illustrator so I love pieces of art that have some sort of message, hidden secret, or tell a story. For my project I decided to build a sandwich from start to finish and photograph the alphabet in it as I went.

For my layout I designed the first and last letter bigger because I thought they were an important part of telling my story. To also go along with the theme of building a sandwich and then eating, I included a glass of milk which is shown in three sages; full, half full, and empty. I also decided to leave Z an empty plate instead of photograph Z to further emphasis eating. I chose to do this because I love projects that successfully show lost and found. Where something obvious (or not so obvious) is taken out and the viewer completes the image themselves.

I enjoyed this project because I was able to incorporate a story and a theme into it. I also enjoyed working with an everyday object, such as food, and thinking about it in a different light to create the letters in the Alphabet.

Learning Summary

I have difficulty seeing errors in format design while looking at my project on the computer screen. I need to print off to see what changes I need to make, and I did not. I only printed the final piece and only after I had it printed in mounted did I notice that not all my letters lined up. I also had difficulty discovering what I wanted to use in this assignment to build my alphabet. I wanted something interesting and getting an idea to get started was my  biggest obstacle.
